Ian Crowe was born in Wimbledon, south London in 1961. He attended Park House Middle School in Wimbledon and Rutlish School in Merton Park, where he starred in a number of drama productions. His first leading role was as the Captain in Gilbert & Sullivan's HMS Pinafore. His first role at Rutlish was as Lady Gay Spanker in London Assurance (Rutlish is an all male comprehensive school) Ian played in a number of local punk bands, though none achieved notable success. He studied at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School between 1981 and 1984. Whilst at Bristol he performed in a play at the Edinburgh Festival opposite Jason Isaacs in his first acting role.
