Born George Abbot Furness in Elizabeth, New Jersey on December 31, 1896 and passed away April 2, 1985. He moved to Japan in 1946 to become one of the Western lawyers defending Japanese war criminals. Furness succeeded in getting an acquittal for his client, WW2-era Foreign Minister Mamoru Shigemitsu, who was reinstated in his old job in 1954. As did many English-speaking expatriates, Furness enjoyed a minor second career in Japanese movies.
