Graduate of musical school in Yerevan, Karen Gevorkian finished Boris Volchek's master class of VGIK Cinematographer Department. After working for small period at Armenfilm Studios as cimetographer (most notable of his works of that period is Master and Servant (1963)), he finished the Advanced Directing Courses in Moscow (master class of Leonid Trauberg in 1967. Since 1970 he was working at Armenfilm Studio, from where he was banished after the film "Farewell Beyond the Border" was banned. In 1981 he moved to work at Lenfilm Studio, then at Dovzhenko Film Studio in Kyiv where he shot his best movie _Pegij pyos, Begushchij krayem morya (1990)_ which earned him international recognition and Best Film Prize at Moscow International Film Festival. In 1992 he established his own independent studio, Navigator.
