Robert Lentz played drums in the Utah Symphony under Maurice Abravanel for 30 years beginning about 1955. He claims that he was hired by Abravanel without auditioning on the strength of several referrals and because he and Abravanel both liked to smoke cigars, which was considered a no-no in Utah in those days. He retired when Abravanel retired. He has traveled to over 30 countries in the course of his career. He later joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and now resides in Sandy, Utah. He is married and is the father of several children.
