Joe "Tech" Huppert began his career as a piano player, working in clubs in France, Germany and the US, touring, performing and recording with bands such as Green, Precious Wax Drippings, Maestro Subgum and Freakwater. His first two musicals, The Angles of Angst and The Eight Hours, were produced in Chicago and Scotland. He was a Music Director for The Second City in Chicago from 1989 to 1997, improvising live on piano, composing, leading show bands, and scoring videos and short films. Second City provided a transition from music into theater, designing and composing sound for theaters such as Organic/Touchstone, Remains, Curious Theater Branch, Prop, Apple Tree, Yale Cabaret, Peninsula Players and many others, before heading to San Diego to work with La Jolla Playhouse and UCSD from 2007-2017. This offered the chance to help launch Broadway bound shows developed at LJP such as Peter and the Starcatchers, Come From Away, Hands on a Hardbody, Memphis and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Joe also started working with video for live performance, receiving a Craig Noel award for video design. He developed innovative solutions for integrating video into scenery and has been on the leading edge of sound design and show control technology for live performance.
