Raised on the beaches near Kingston, Jamaica, his father was a sailor. At 14 years of age he stowed away on merchant ships, bound first for South Carolina and t hen Cuba, where he began his career perfoming in bars and theatres. Europe was next and after 10 days in the bowels of a huge container vessel, he emerged to start work with Zsa Zsa Gabor at the Moulin Rouge in Paris and Josephine Baker at the Olympia amongst many other stars of the day. His film career spanned many of the Classics, including Cleopatra, Moulin Rouge and Mundo Carne.
