Kira Muratova

Kira Muratova was born in the Kingdom of Romania (now Moldova), but developed her career mainly in Ukraine, where she moved after graduating from the VGIK. Despite the censorship imposed by the Soviet Union, Muratova managed to preserve her artistic autonomy and, with a strong feminist imprint, presented empowered and complex women. Her cinema works both the fusion of genres and registers, anchoring itself mostly in an absurd or grotesque code without losing the naturalistic bases. Muratova knew how to use her limitations to her advantage, creating a cinema that was profoundly authentic and true to herself. Her work, which challenged the narrative and aesthetic norms of the time, positioned her as one of the most idiosyncratic filmmakers in Soviet cinema, being recognized at prestigious international festivals such as Cannes, Berlin and Venice. With the passage of time, her legacy has been revalued, consolidating her as one of the most original and critical voices in 20th century auteur cinema.
