He received a bachelor of science degree in aeronautical engineering from Auburn University. He began his Naval career as an ensign in 1958 and received his wings in 1960. He flew A1H aircraft aboard the USS Saratoga, and later deployed aboard the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt where he flew the A3B aircraft.
