Born in Moscow, Idaho, McCaffrey became a popular radio and television personality over his career. He is probably best remembered in the New York City region for his stint as newscaster on the "11th Hour News" program on WNBC-TV from 1952-1963, but he was also seen nationally as host and moderator of a variety of game shows and other programs. His undergraduate education was at the University of Wisconson and his master's degree was from Columbia University. He also worked in advertising and editing and worked as an editor at MGM for a time.
