For over 50 years, Gordon E. Sawyer served as the Sound Director for Samuel Goldwyn Studios, and later for M.G.M. He was honored with three Oscars for his work on The Bishop's Wife (1947), The Alamo (1960), and West Side Story (1961), and received twelve additional Oscar nominations over the course of his career. The Gordon E. Sawyer Award, named in his honor, is given annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. A lifetime achievement award, it is given to "an individual in the motion picture industry whose technological contributions have brought credit to the industry."
