Schlesser was a French race car driver, who competed in every level of racing for more than 15 years. He was adept at rallys, endurance events and road courses. He was killed at the French Grand Prix when he lost control of his Honda in the rain, crashed into an earth bank and burst into flames. After his death, his friend and business partner Guy Ligier designated all of his Ligier Formula 1 cars "JS" in his honor.
