Carey read English at Cambridge and studied filmmaking at NYU in the Tisch graduate film program and at the Binger Film Lab in Amsterdam. Carey wrote and directed Cold Harbou (2014) a South African crime thriller in which a township cop takes on the Triad and police corruption in Cape Town. Tony Kgoroge (Mandela) stars (and won Best Actor at Durban) with Fana Mokoena (World War Z) Deon Lotz (Skoonheid / Beauty) and Yu Nan (The Expendables). Cold Harbour opened the 2015 edition of New York African Film Festival at Lincoln Center and screened in competition at Durban, Carthage, AFRIFF, PAFF LA and Film Fra Sor Norway as well as being screened at Romafrica, FilmAfrika Cologne, Afrika FilmTage Bayreuth, Deutsches Filminstitut Frankfurt and at curated screenings in Pamploma, Tenerife and the Basque Country. It was released by UIP in Southern Africa and subsequently shown on M-Net and Netflix. Original Child Bomb(2004) a feature documentary about the human cost of nuclear weapons, premiered at Tribeca, won the grand jury prize at Silverdocs and the Bologna Human Rights Nights. Other festival screenings included Seattle, Florida, Hawaii, Copenhagen, Geneva, Seoul, Belgrade, Hiroshima, MOMA and the Japan Society NYC. An associated short film, B is for Bomb, won the Cannes 2006 Short Film Corner competition. Carey is the writer producer of the tragic romance, Democracy, based on the novel by Joan Didion, in development as a four part limited series. As writer director, her work in progress is a paranoid thriller, The Opportunist.
