Theatrical producer and director; founder in 1954 of the New York Shakespeare Festival and in 1967 of the Public Theatre. Through his efforts and foresight, "Hair" (1967) and "A Chorus Line" (1975), among other productions, came to the Broadway stage. (The latter became the longest-running musical in Broadway history.)
