Annti Peippo (1934-1989) had been the main cameraman for Finnish new wave director Risto Jarva but also made documentaries which combined archival footage with still photographs to interrogate aspects of the violent history of his country. These films such as Viapori Fortress of Finland, The Walls Have Eyes and An Observer In Finland have been compared to the essay films of Alain Resnais and Chris Marker. While these works were not known in the United States, several were exhibited later in a series called Baby It's Cold Outside in the spring of 1998 at New York City's prestigious Museum of Modern Art.
