Joel Rane was born in Los Angeles and raised in Burbank, California, and has lived in Southern California except for his undergraduate years in Berkeley, California, where he studied the ancient Greek art of Rhetoric. After studying film and writing, he received a Master's degree in Professional Writing from USC in 1989, the same year he edited four video features for the artist Raymond Pettibon. Rane later became a librarian, graduating from the UCLA Graduate School of Library and Information Science in 1993. In 2007 his book "Scream at the Librarian", a collection of vignettes illustrated by Pettibon and Cristin Sheehan Sullivan, was published by the Booklyn artists' cooperative in New York City. He self-published a fictional autobiography on the Art Scene in Los Angeles during the early 1990s, "Supporting the Homeless", on the Smashwords platform in 2019. He continues to write and serve the Los Angeles community as a librarian.
