Born in Montreal, Canada, Frederick A. Thomson--not to be confused with cowboy star Fred Thomson--had a 20-year career on the stage as an actor and producer before entering the film industry. He was a longtime director at Vitagraph, although he would occasionally appear in the studio's films as an actor. He directed his last film in 1921, and after appearing in A Tailor-Made Man (1922) for United Artists in 1922, he left the business. He died in Hollywood of heart problems in 1925. He was 55.
