Hannelore Unterberg (née Neupert) was born in 1940 in Altenburg, Germany to economist Walter and actor Johanna. Hannelore studied at the German Academy of Film Arts, graduating in 1971. She worked as an assistant director, writer, and director for the East German studio DEFA, specializing in children's films such as Concert for Frying Pan and Orchestra (1976) and Isabel on the Stairs (1984).
