Fabio Vacchi studied with Giacomo Manzoni and Franco Donatoni; he attended courses at the Berkshire Music Center in Tanglewood. He won the Koussewitzky Prize in Composition (1974), and the first prize at the Gaudeamus Competition in Holland (1976). He wrote some operas (Girotondo, 1982, to a libretto adapted from Schnitzler's Reigen; La Station thermale, 1993, based on Goldoni's I bagni d'Abano); the pantomime Faust, poema coreografico, after Heine, for electronic tape; a Piano Concerto (1985); and the chamber cycle Luoghi Immaginari (1992). His score for The Profession of Arms (2001) was awarded the David di Donatello Prize.
