Photographer and later ethnographer Vincent Carelli was born in Paris in 1953 and founded, at age 33 in Brazil the NGO "Video In The Villages," after attending the University of São Paulo there. His project is about collaborating with various indigenous tribal groups in the Amazon area to use media technology as a way of preserving their ways of life, and to put cameras in the hands of these groups. The resulting works advocate for such causes as autonomy and land rights. In 2001, Carelli spent 10 days in residence at the Pacific Film Archive in Berkeley to present films and to meet with University of California students.
