Thierry Frémaux was born in Tullins outside Grenoble and grew up in the Minguettes suburb of Lyon. He has been the artistic director and then managing director of the Institut Lumière in Lyon since 1995. He became the artistic director of the Cannes Film Festival in 2004 and general delegate in 2007.
