Douglas Underdahl is a designer of motion picture equipment, author, teacher, director of photography, and director. His company Long Valley Equipment manufactures the industry standard Seven Jib, Super Track Dolly, and lens mounts for Red Digital Cinema, and he designed and fabricated equipment for the deep dive photography in James Cameron's Titanic. He authored The 16mm Camera Book and has contributed to Icom and In Motion magazines, and the 9th edition of The American Cinematographer Manual. Douglas has taught film production at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, The School of Visual Arts, the New York Film Academy, and the International Film and Television Workshops in Rockport, Maine. Douglas photographed the features Tied to a Chair and Influence (for which he won Best Cinematography at the Nice International Film Festival) for director Michael Bergmann and Mulberry Street for director Abel Ferrara. He has photographed TV commercials for national clients including Prudential, AT+T, and Horizon Blue Cross. As writer/director, his short films - including one produced for Saturday Night Live - have played at many festivals. He directed Film School Confidential, a feature shot in 35mm that premiered at Rotterdam International Film Festival and played at 12 other festivals in 8 countries, winning awards including Best Screenplay at Winecountry Film Festival, and Best Feature and Staff Award at Houston Worldfest. It is distributed by Passion River and available on Netflix. Douglas was editor of the documentary George Tice for PBS, and director of the short film Passaic, a true crime pilot, which has played at over ten festivals.
