“Experimental film is often considered enigmatic, because like poetry, its language requires an open, almost naïve participation from the viewer, who is often 'afraid' that the images become threatening because of their unexpected nature.” Born in Berlin in 1928, she was influenced from an early age by her painter father. In the early 1930s she arrived with her family to Argentina, where she would spend the rest of her life. Initially she dedicated herself to painting, drawing, engraving and woodcuts, but in the middle of the century she began to explore the new artistic avant-gardes, awakening the passion that would define her work. Happening, collaboration, filmmaking, creativity and freedom are some of the words we associate with Hirsch, one of the most influential and outstanding figures of Latin American experimental cinema, who went down in history for fusing knowledge and sensibilities in search of an infinite image.
