John Mcarthy is a writer, broadcaster and journalist. In 1986 he was reporting from the Lebanon when he was kidnapped by the militant group Islamic Jihad. He was held captive until 8 August 1991. His five and a half years in captivity make him Britain's longest-held hostage in the Lebanon. Following his return, he and his girlfriend Jill Morrell, who had campaigned tirelessly to raise awareness of his plight, co-authored a memoir of their ordeal. Their relationship ended in 1995. McCarthy continues to work in the media and is a patron of Freedom from Torture.
