Dr Iain Stewart is a Scottish geologist who graduated from Stathclyde University in Scotland, in 1986 with a degree in geology and geography. He followed this with a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy which is a higher research degree) on Mediterranean earthquakes at the University of Bristol in England, submitted in 1990. After some time as a teacher at Brunel University, he moved to the Centre for Geosciences at Glasgow University in 2002 and began pitching an idea about a television series on Geology. The following year, he began working with the BBC on the Rough Science programme, and on two Horizon specials - Helike: The Real Atlantis and Earthquake Storms. Since 2004, he has been a Lecturer at the University of Plymouth and continues to broadcast on geology.
