Rhythm guitarist Robert Berryhill was born in 1947. In 1960 when Berryhill was thirteen-years-old he took a trip to the Hawaiian Islands, where he learned to surf and play the ukulele. Robert subsequently began seriously working on the guitar after returning to California. Berryhill was the rhythm guitarist and a founding member of the surf-rock group The Surfaris. The Surfaris had a huge hit with the exciting instrumental "Wipe Out," which Robert co-wrote and played rhythm guitar on. After the original incarnation of The Surfaris broke up, Berryhill formed a new version of the group made up of himself, his wife Gene, and sons Joel and Deven.
