At the young age of 15, Rainer Gessmann started as a cabin boy in Hamburg, Germany in 1964. After four years of sea voyage from Europe to North America, the Caribbean and East Asia, at age 19, he arrived at Nagoya Port in Japan. There he would stay for some time living illegally in the land of the rising sun for years without a residence permit. He worked as a waiter and eventually started acting in various films and TV shows until he was able to legalize his residence status and set up his own company in Japan.
