John Capo was born in Brooklyn, New York. He produced the 2013 Off-Broadway productions of Bayside! The Musical!, based on TV's #1 teen drama Saved by the Bell (1989), and Showgirls! The Musical!, the parody of the cult classic film Showgirls (1995). Both shows received unanimous critical acclaim, with the New York Times naming Bayside! a Critic's Pick and AfterEllen naming Showgirls! one of the year's best shows. He also won the New York Television Festival Pitch Contest. He attended the Conservatory of Theater Arts and Film at SUNY Purchase, whose graduates include Edie Falco, Stanley Tucci, Parker Posey, Hal Hartley, Nick Gomez, Melissa Leo, Sherry Stringfield and Todd Graff. He initially auditioned for the film program but was placed as one of six students in the inaugural class of the school's new dramatic writing program instead. There he studied screen-writing under Eric Mandelbaum, A. Dean Bell, J.D. Zeik and Edward Pomerantz. Upon graduating, John produced a number of original plays in New York City at such venues as The Duplex, The WorkShop Theater, Manhattan Repertory Theater, Altered Stages and Galapagos Art Space. He worked for two years in development at Theatreworks/USA, the theatrical touring company. He entered the Masters program in public relations at New York University. Thereafter he founded John Capo Public Relations, an entertainment PR company whose clients have won or been nominated for Emmy, Grammy, Tony, Obie and Drama Desk Awards.
