Emily Goldsmith was born Emily Alice Brown on August 26, 1880 in Sittingbourne, Kent, England. A resident of Strood, Kent, England, Emily was the only one of her eight siblings who had yet to emigrate to America. Goldsmith along with her husband Frank John Goldsmith and their nine-year-old son Frankie Goldsmith decided to emigrate to the United States by crossing the Atlantic ocean aboard the mighty luxury ocean liner the RMS Titanic with Detroit, Michigan as their ultimate destination. (Emily and Frank had previously lost another son Bertie to diphtheria in 1911.) The Goldsmiths first embarked on the Titanic as third class passengers in Southampton, England on April 10, 1912. On that fateful night of April 15, 1912 Emily and Frankie survived the sinking of the Titanic by being loaded together onto a lifeboat while Frank alas went down with the ship. In the wake of the tragic Titanic incident Emily settled in Detroit and found employment as a dressmaker. Moreover, Goldsmith also acted as a volunteer for the American Red Cross during World War II and got married to another man, Harry Illman. Emily died at age 75 on September 22, 1955 while on board a train in Ashland, Ohio, where many of her family lived.
