Mocedades is a Spanish singing group formed in 1969 and still active in 2013. In 1967 in the Basque city of Bilbao, Amaya, Izaskun and Estibaliz Uranga formed a group called "The Uranga Sisters". While performing in and around their hometown other brothers and friends joined the group. In 1969 they sent a demo tape to famous composer Juan Carlos Calderon who was immediately interested in taking the group under his wing and gave them the name "Mocedades" (which means "youth" in Spanish). Three male singers Carlos Zubiaga (who joined from "Los Mitos"), Jose Ipina and Javier Garay joined the three Uranga sisters to become the original formation of Mocedades known to this day as "The six historic ones". The group skyrocketed to fame when they represented Spain in the 1973 Eurovision Song Festival with the song "Eres tu" composed for them by J.C. Calderon. They finished in second place but the following year the song became a world hit and one of the very few Spanish language songs to reach the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in March 1974. Other famous songs by Mocedades include "Tomame o dejame", "El vendedor", "La Otra Espana" and "Me siento seguro", but none of them reached the heights of "Eres tu" which, to this day, remains a favorite in airplay lists of Easy Listening radio stations in the USA and has been featured in many films. In 1980 Mocedades signed up with CBS Records (now Sony) and as of 2013 24 different people have been part of the group, yet no formation has been able to repeat the success of the first historic line-up.
