Vince Cable (nicknamed "Vince the Cable" by political journalist and broadcaster Andrew Neil) is a British politician who was the Liberal Democrat MP for Twickenham from 1997 to 2015 and again from 2017. He was the Liberal Democrat Shadow Trade and Industry Minister (1997-2003), Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer (2003-2010), Acting Leader of the Liberal Democrats in 2007 and Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills under the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition government. After Tim Farron resigned from the leadership of the Liberal Democrats in 2017 due to the intense media scrutiny of his religious beliefs, with particular regard to his views on gay sex, Cable was elected as the party's leader.
