Jonathan Van Meter is a contributing editor of American Vogue, and a regular contributor to the New York Times Magazine, who writes about Hollywood, media, fashion, society, and politics. Having started his writing career with a job at Atlantic City Magazine, he has written for Vanity Fair, The New Yorker, New York Magazine, Tattler, Esquire, The Guardian, Allure, Spin, Spy, and The Sunday Times Magazine (London), among other notable publications. From 1992-1994, he served as the founding Editor-in-Chief of Vibe Magazine, created by the legendary Quincy Jones. Mr. Van Meter is author of Neon-Lit, Kidney-Shaped, Low-Rent, Flat-Roofed, Doo-Wop, Commercial Architecture: Or, Learning from Wildwood, New Jersey (Pentagram Design, London, 2001); The Last Good Time: Skinny D'Amato, the Notorious 500 Club, and the Rise and Fall of Atlantic City (Crown, New York, 2003); and Vogue X Music (Abrams, New York, 2018), and executive producer of the feature documentary film Let's Get Frank (2003), chronicling the life of former US Representative Barney Frank (D-MA), America's first openly gay Congressman, as well as one of its most dynamic and beloved. He has appeared regularly on US television, as well as the Ruby Wax Show in the UK. In January 1993, he was interviewed by Maria Shriver for her historic First Person with Maria Shriver episode "The Gay 90's: Sex, Power, and Influence". Van Meter has lectured on magazine journalism and publishing at Howard University, Fordham University, Rice University, and Radcliffe College/Harvard University.
