A graduate of Loyalist College's Film and Television Production where he majored in screenwriting, Derek Robertson began working as a production assistant on music videos, commercials, and reality series soon after graduating. Making the leap to scripted series, Robertson worked in production, assistant directing, and visual effects which he later said was instrumental to his own writing, not only in the mentorship from writers he would meet on productions, but in learning the ins and outs of a script going to camera and through post production. Breaking into the story department first on HBO's mini-series 'Lewis and Clark', Robertson would go on to work as a script coordinator on Freeform's 'The Bold Type', the mini-series 'The Kennedy's After Camelot', the feature film 'A Simple Favor', and the NBCUniversal/Bell Media series 'Killjoys'. Being promoted over four seasons of 'Killjoys' to Executive Story Editor, the series would mark Robertson's first produced writing credit on the season four episode 'It Takes a Pillage.'
