He completed most of the Ph.D. program in organic chemistry, then took leave of absence when research director passed away unexpectedly. In 1978 he was a co-founder and initial investor in Molecular Design Ltd., along with Stewart Marson and Todd Wipke. MDL was a software company specializing in the development of chemistry related software and database management. MDL was the first company to provide an interactive graphical registry and full and substructure retrieval. The company's initial products were first-of-their-kind systems for storing and retrieving molecules as graphical structures and for managing databases of chemical reactions and related data. These systems revolutionized the way scientists accessed and managed chemical information in the 1980s. In 1986 Molecular Design Ltd. was sold to Maxwell Communications for $56MM, and then to Symyx. In 1979 he was a co-founder and half owner of Benzyl Products Inc., a Pharmaceutical manufacturing company which specialized in the large scale bulk manufacture of generic drugs. He was responsible for developing Omniglow's chemical technology and manufacturing processes and the design and construction of the chemical manufacturing plant initially located in Novato, CA. He was also a member of the board of directors throughout that time. Omniglow became a large contractor for the Department of Defense during both Gulf wars, with sales to the US government of over $50 MM. In 1993 Omniglow successfully completed a leveraged buyout of American Cyanamid's Chemical light division, and became the world's largest producer of chemical light products. In 1997 Omniglow Corp was split into two parts. The military part of the business was sold to a large investment group, Cytek Technologies for approx. $80MM. The novelty, commercial and safety part of the business was retained by the original owners. In 1998 he co-founded Optime Therapeutics, a biotech company specializing in drug delivery systems. He was a co-inventor and author of over 10 liposome manufacturing patents. Three issued in the US, others in Australia, Israel, France, Germany, Ireland, Great Britain and Switzerland. Optime Therapeutics was later acquired by Lippomix Inc. in 2007 In 1999 he also co-founded Integrigen Corp. Integrigen was a Biotech company specializing in antibody research and production. Integrigen was sold to Fabris Corp in 2007, which was later acquired by Sevion Corp. William Heriot currently operates a film and video production studio in Novato CA. He was a Producer, Technical advisor, and special effects artist for the production of Hollywood motion picture "MOOLA". The film was directed by Don Most. The film "Moola", starring William Mapother, Shailene Woodley, Treat Williams, Daniel Baldwin, and Curtis Armstrong, premiered at The Newport Beach Film Festival, where it earned Don Most The Outstanding Achievement In Directing Award. Moola is a somewhat fictionalized portrayal of the formation, history and operations of the Omniglow experience. Heriot was portrayed as "Wild Bill", one of the main characters in the film. In 2007 Bill Founded Lippomix Corp. Lippomix purchased all assets and intellectual property of Optime therapeutics Inc. Lippomix is a producer of liposome products and drug delivery systems and currently sells its products and licenses it patents worldwide.
