In 1975 Donnie Harper, along with his group "The Voices of Tomorrow" became the first Gospel artist to appear on "Saturday Night Live (NBC Telecast). The New Jersey Mass Choir was founded by Donnie Harper in 1983 under the Gospel Music Workshops of America (GMWA) under the leadership of Rev. James Cleveland. Donnie is a revered gospel pioneer who is noted for his performance with "Foreigner" on their top 10 hit "I Want To Know What Love Is" in 1984. This was the first time that a Gospel Choir teamed up with a Rock Group in the secular market. This ground breaking collaboration sparked a trend, of gospel and secular groups working together to relay a unified message, which still continues today. Since its inception Donnie Harper and the New Jersey Mass Choir have traveled extensively throughout the US and abroad to sold out concerts in England, Bermuda, Bahamas, Holland, Spain and Italy. This Stellar award winning and Grammy nominated group has performed with the likes of Aretha Franklin, Patti Labelle, Stevie Wonder, Michael Bolton, Earth, Wind and Fire, Diana Ross, George Michaels, Chaka Khan, Michael Jackson, The Hawkins Family, Bishop Paul Morton, The Canton Spirituals, The Winans, Andre and Sandra Crouch, and numerous other artists . They also teamed up with Garth Brooks for one of his many Grammy performances and with Quincy Jones for his "Salute to Grammy Legends". Donnie continues to this day as a director, song writer, producer and performer. He performed to sold out audiences at the Umbria Jazz Festival in Perugia Italy. The New Jersey Mass Choir also provided the music ministry for Whitney Houston's funeral service while simultaneously singing at Radio City Music Hall with Aretha Franklin and Bishop Carlton Pearson. The Stellar Award winning and Grammy nominated New Jersey Mass Choir has also performed on Bobby Jones Gospel and at McDonald's Gospel Fest (also operating as a judge for Gospel Fest). Born in San Antonio, Texas, Donnie eventually moved to New Jersey. Ordained in 1991, Rev. Donnie Harper is the minister of music for Good Neighbor Baptist Church in Newark, NJ. He is the proud godfather of Crystal Williams-Brown. Donnie continues to this day as a director, song writer, Grammy producer and performer ministering the gospel with the New Jersey Mass Choir and his sisters "Grace."
