Born into the artistic heart of Paris, Alex lived the first years of his life on Rue de Rennes, and in the galleries of Lucernaire. After followed a few years in Denmark which was later, at the age of 5, traded for the great urban landscapes New York and Boston where he spent his formative years. He traveled a great deal as a child, and these journeys deepened his interest in human stories. Film became an all encompassing past-time already at the age of 12. Alex's passions for film were cemented as he experience the eclectic selections of the Coolidge Corner Movie Theatre, which was two blocks from his home in Brookline. At 14 he started an apprenticeship with Director Andrew P. Jones, a then established figure in the television industry, having won Emmy's for his work. He taught Alex the musicality of film editing, as Andrew had been a solo violinist with some of the largest Symphony Orchestra's earlier in his career. From 1996 Alex worked independently as a cameraman on many local non-fiction programs for the local Brookline Public Broadcasting channel, BAT. Alex graduated from Brookline High School, joining a long list of creative alumni: Eli "Paperboy" Reed, Michael Bluestein, Hugh B. Cave, Johnny Contardo, Michael Dukakis, Albert Maysles & David Maysles, Conan O'Brien, Alan L. Rachins, Lew Schneider , Mike Wallace... While studying at MassArt, Alex was granted a trip to Cuba in 2000 for the development of an experimental visual project, a trip which cultivated a long-standing and fruitful relationship with the Cuban art world: filmmakers, photographers, musicians, and independent artists. The Cuban approach to filmmaking became his own model, and his time there acted as a film school of sorts, and instilled the principle that one must view each obstacle as a "solution in progress".
