Born and raised in New York, Barnett is a graduate of Syracuse University. From a young age, he worked throughout New York City and Los Angeles, earning experience both on set and in the production office, and began earning recognition for his body of work when he was named a top emerging artist by Student Filmmakers Magazine (Page 30, September 2008) and Art For Progress (November 2008). His short format productions went on to premiere at film festivals around the world. While continuing his work as a script reader and director, Barnett earned his masters degree from UCLA in screenwriting. In 2012, he won the UCLA Screenwriter's Showcase for his dramedy, "Vinegar Hill," which was also a finalist for the 2012 Screenwriter's Colony in New England and a Semifinalist for the 2013 Nicholl Screenwriting Fellowship. In 2013, he won the Sloan Student Grand Jury Prize through the Tribeca Film Institute for his scientific thriller, "Waking Hours," which broke him into the studio system. He was most recently named on Tracking Board's 2016 Young and Hungry List as one of the top 100 new writers in Hollywood and is known for adapting DC Comic Book "The Monolith" for Lionsgate.
