Born in Chicago to German father and Swedish American mother. Attended the Eugene Lang College of the New School for Social Research in New York City, but left after first year to pursue creative writing and explore the 1980s Lower East Side art and music scene, doing sound for bands and hanging out with drag queens, artists, Anti-Folk musicians and rockers. Held a series of odd jobs at such places as CBGB's, Outlaw Biker Magazine, and St. Peter's Church while publishing short stories and prose in underground literary magazines throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s. Got her start in film translating the narrative script from French into English for the documentary "Peru: Between the Hammer and the Anvil," which went on to win 2nd place at the AFI 12th Annual Visions of US Home Video Film Festival. Shortly thereafter moved to Los Angeles to pursue screen writing.
