The Chimes, a vocal group noted for its crisp harmonies, was formed in Brooklyn, NY, in the mid-'50s by lead singer Lenny Cocco. Their very first single hit it big: a 1930s ballad popularized by Tommy Dorsey called "Once in a While", on the independent Tag Records label. It hit #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in 1961. Their follow-up song, "I'm In the Mood for Love", was also a ballad from the 1930s but it didn't do as well as its predecessor, only reaching #38. In 1962 the group changed its name from The Chimes to Lenny Cocco & The Chimes and released a single, "Two Times", but it was not a hit. The group broke up in 1964.
