Maajid Nawaz is a British liberal activist and author of Pakistani origin. He is a former member of Hizb ut Tahrir who spent four years in Egyptian prison for this association. The prison experience changed his mind and he renounced the ideology of Islamism. He now campaigns for liberalism, secularism and human rights. He also ran for the Parliament in 2015 UK General Elections as a candidate of Liberal Democrats. Nawaz graduated from University of London with a degree in Law and Arabic, and did his Masters degree in Political Theory from London School of Economics. He is the founding chairman of Quilliam think tank and a regular contributor to international publications.
