Like most children, he was fascinated by television to the point of mimicking everything that caught his attention. As a child he was humorous, theatrical and loved to entertain everyone at home with skits. While attending elementary school, Berto and several children from other NYC public schools were chosen to be part of a "Kid In" that was hosted by Bill Cosby. As fate would have it, Mr. Cosby invited the nine-year-old Berto up on stage for a comical Q & A- and he stole the show; this experience left an indelible impression on him. Although his wish of becoming a successful actor did not materialize until later on in life, the desire never stopped burning in his heart. One evening, while attending a men's group at his house of worship, the Park Slope Christian Center, the group was asked to express a significant regret in their lives. Berto shared that he regretted not pursuing his dreams of becoming an actor more diligently and was then encouraged by the rest of the men to go out and live his dream. This revealing moment inspired Berto to rigorously pursue a career in acting. He went out, picked up copy of Back Stage magazine and contacted the Actor's Rep Agency. They scheduled an audition, and then sent him out for a head shot, then soon after booked him on jobs as an extra.
