Garrett Backstrom was born October 25, 1995 in Colorado Springs, Colorado, to Elizabeth and Gary Backstrom. He was raised in a Christian household and is strong in his faith. Between the ages of three to thirteen, Garrett was a competitive gymnast and trained at the Olympic Training Center. He won two back-to-back Colorado State Championships and dreamed of going to the Olympics. His dreams took him in another direction due to multiple injuries. Having a passion for filmmaking from a very young age, Garrett's next pursuit took him to California where he pursued his ambitions for filmmaking and acting. His parents placed him in independent studies for one semester to test the waters. Soon after booking multiple gigs and getting very positive feedback from his agency, one semester turned into a film career for Garrett. From 2010-2014, he starred in a handful of shows and movies including - "Brothers & Sisters" (2011), "Lab Rats" (2012), "Jesse" (2012), "Hello Herman" (2012), "Motel Life" (2012), and "Summer Snow" (2014). Garrett attended Brighton Hall, was elected student body president, developed leadership skills, and fostered long-standing relationships with many in the film industry. In 2014 he decided to put his acting career on hold to master film production at Loyola Marymount University. During those four years, Garrett spent his spare time freelancing as a director, producer, and cinematographer. He worked on a variety of commercials, music videos, and narrative productions. At the age of 22, he directed an automotive commercial for the largest Maserati dealership in North America, a fashion campaign commercial for a luxury street-style brand "Revelatiant," and four narrative short films. He also acted in two feature films while attending college, "Late Bloomer" (2016) and "Bad Impulse" (2020). He graduated from the School of Film and Television at LMU in 2018. After graduating from Loyola Marymount University, Garrett has focused his attention on narrative film and television. His passion for directing and producing drove him to partner with Ethan Terra and join his production company Optx Entertainment as a producer. Garrett continues to foster and develop new relationships and skills as an upcoming film director, producer, and actor.
