Hoyt Dwyer was born in Chicago, Illinois. His family subsequently lived in Atlanta, Georgia and he went to The Wesleyan School in Norcross. He did his undergraduate work at Clemson. Following graduation, he studied Writing at The Creative Circus, followed by Filmmaking at FAMU International in Prague, Czech. His work has been recognized by Cannes Lions, AICP, Clios, and Communication Arts, among others. A key theme across his work involves "inverting the expected," a technique he learned at FAMU while studying Cristi Puiu's short film "Cigarettes and Coffee," which features an elderly father asking his son for money, (thus inverting the expected situation of a son asking his father for money.)
