Writer/Director/Producer Sam Horak (she/her) is totally obsessed with the creation of story. She graduated from Dalhousie University with an honors in theatre and has been producing and writing plays since her cousins could walk. With strong foundations in theatre, Horak is now rolling boldly into the world of film and television, most recently completing her first short film, Dear Dad, F*@# You! through the AFCOOP FILM5 program. Horak is starting to realize that this whole film thing is kind of addictive and is now working towards writing her first feature screenplay called So NOT Punk Rock, adapted from a play she wrote, which was adapted from a scrappy little (almost) one person show she wrote, with humble dive bar beginnings (Halifax Fringe festival, Gus' Pub, 2017). Dealing with issues of trauma and mental health, the writing of these vast and various versions has proven to be a huge step towards recovery. And if you're sensing an angsty lofi-femme-punk vibe, you're right! Horak has been playing in punk bands since her early twenties. With excitement to share this very timely story with you on the screen, Horak will stop procrastinating by writing this bio and get back to it. Horak is truly grateful to be able to continue on this journey and for the support of AFCOOP, PARC, EFT and the brilliant storytellers she's met along the way. Born both a film enthusiast and theatre nerd, Horak hopes to continue exploring the producing and writing side of storytelling while maintaining her strong interest in gender equality and feminism.
