Maggie Bury Walker was born Margaret Greenwood. In 1946, she joined Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop at Ormesby Hall in Middlesborough. She was known as Leila Greenwood for a while and then she married company designer John Bury. She stayed with Theatre Workshop for fourteen years until 1961 when she started East 15 Acting School. It was in 1962 that she met her second husband Wilf Walker. She was principal of the school (which was inspired by what she had learnt from Joan Littlewood & all at Theatre Workshop) for four decades. Many of the students who went through this unique system of actor training have gone on to have careers in film and television.
