The Penguin: The unexpected diamond in the rough of the year.

Last Sunday saw the end of the Penguin series, which with its final episode ranked as one of the best in IMDb's history with a brand new 9.7 rating. Now the question is: Is this series really that good that none of its 8 episodes went below an 8.5 rating? My short answer: yes, absolutely. My long answer is below. Cast and performances Of the many things that stand out about this Matt Reeves miniseries masterpiece, it's undoubtedly the cast and their performances. The fantastic foursome of this s

How do you create an animated hero with universal appeal? How do you craft a character that children around the world can connect with and remember? ‘They were merely massacred, but I was left with psychological trauma!’

As the protagonist of this animated documentary, the director of “Waltz with Bashir” has sincerely reflected on his artistic imagination and aesthetic choices. Will today’s Israeli soldiers, who have fought with bloodlust in Gaza while casually filming their “creative works,” experience similar nightmares in the future? An Israeli soldier named Frank stands in the middle of the street with his MAC, shouting as he fires wildly at his enemies. A poster of Bashi (the militia commander who led the L

Howl : There’s Nothing Wrong With A Little Drama

One of my family’s favourite stories about me could work just as well in a psychiatrist’s office as it does in a family reunion. It goes like this : when I was around five years old, my parents sent me to kindergarten, and I loved it. From my classmates to the activities to the teachers, I couldn't get enough. Life was as close to perfect as it could be… Until one day, when my teacher phoned home. As my mom soon learned, there was nothing special about that day. We’d been switching between playt

Apocalypse Z: Are Zombie Films Running Out of Ideas?

Hello Peliplaters! It had been ages since I last watched a zombie movie. So when I discovered Amazon Prime had released a new one—in Spanish, no less—I was thrilled. Yet after viewing it, I was left with a sense of "empty satisfaction." "It's a decent film," I mused, "but have zombie movies run out of fresh ideas?" To be fair, this film isn't entirely devoid of originality compared to its predecessors. It effectively explores the premise: "What if COVID could turn humans into zombies?" Director

What Scares Me Most in 'The Substance' Isn't Monstro Elisasue, But...

After watching The Substance, I sat in silence for a long, long time. Part of it was physical discomfort—I needed time to calm down. Honestly, there were several moments during the film when I almost felt like vomiting, and I really shouldn’t have eaten a chicken burger right before watching. The other part was psychological exhaustion. Yes, disgust and fatigue—these are the emotions that this film, billed as the most feminist movie of 2024, left me with as a woman. There was an indescribable, a

You’re supposed to fall in love with them… but you won’t!

I always look for movies and series that manage to capture that real connection between the characters, and that's exactly what makes Nobody Wants This such an unforgettable series. From the very first episode, the chemistry between Kristen Bell and Adam Brody is palpable. They play Joanne, an outspoken podcaster, and Noah, a rabbi, whose lives couldn't be more different. However, as they get to know each other, it’s possible to feel the spark between them, and that makes all the difference to t

The Apprentice: The most controversial movie of the year or an amazing marketing move?

"Where did that millionaire real estate agent who only said five words come from in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York?" When I was just a child, this is what I asked myself after watching the movie. I was never much interested in the life of this controversial real estate agent who became a politician. Nonetheless, during election year, the interesting Ali Abbasi managed to bring to life one of the most powerful cinematographic portrayals that criticizes the concept of perfectionism in the United S

Appreciate Today’s Car Films While You Can

Last month, The Grand Tour aired its final episode, and as a car enthusiast, I have a lot of thoughts. As the owner of a 2008 Porsche Boxster, I’m passionate about the sensory experience that gas-powered cars provide. Every time I take my car out for a spin with the top down, I get lost in the roar of the engine, the wind in my face, the smoky scent from roadside restaurants, the music playing from nearby shops, the glances from pedestrians, and even the earthy smell after rain. This kind of imm

The Substance: Must Women Become Monsters to Defy the Male Gaze?

The Substance might be the most thought-provoking film I've seen this year. Even a week after watching it, I'm still trying to make sense of all the complex emotions it stirred and figure out why it left me feeling so conflicted. I have been increasingly anticipating the film ever since The Substance premiered at the 77th Cannes Film Festival and received reviews calling it "shocking" and "breathtaking". As a fan of horror, body horror is something irresistible for me, so I really expected The S

The Apprentice: a satire that gets to be the butt of its own joke?

The reversal of events is truly unexpected. A year ago, Donald Trump was a defendant in four federal criminal cases, his social media accounts were banned for incendiary statements and misinformation, and his status as the Republican presidential candidate was still undecided. A year later, Trump became the 47th President of the United States. This outcome underscores how desperate Americans have felt. Despite witnessing countless absurdities, lies, scandals, and inappropriate behavior from Trum

Alejandro Franco "Arlequin": I think that the more you hit the character, the more popular he is, it gives him a mythical reputation. I don't think Trump is Superman, but rather that the Democrats are clumsy: they have forgotten to defend the poor - their voting base - and on top of that they have put a black woman as a candidate, which is demanding too much from a population that is extremely conservative for the most part. I knew Roy Cohn from a film with James Woods in the 70s/80s, an amoral climber who made his way into the film industry. I didn't know that he had been Trump's mentor, I discovered it when reading the summary of this film. Perhaps Trump represents the epitome of American idiosyncrasy, and they see a recalcitrant conservative self-made man as admirable. What I don't understand is why he is a friend of those who are enemies of the USA, it is something that escapes my imagination. Impossible to imagine Reagan being a friend of the Soviets, Trump would have hugged Brezhnev. Great analysis.
