Is That Trump? 5 Roles Giving Déjà Vu

With Trump back in the global spotlight recently due to his tariff policies, his distinctive expressions always reminds me of quite a few "familiar faces" from the movies. Hollywood seems to always draw from reality, especially when it comes to figures as dramatic and buzzworthy as Trump, whether in ironic or serious ways, or maybe just in attempts to piggyback on him. Below are five Hollywood characters from recent years that I feel draw some inspiration from Trump. Kenneth Marshall - Mickey 17

marvelousmars: It's kind of hard not to think about fascism these days, so I'm not surprised we see reflections on Trump in so many characters. Still, this is a great list - I haven't seen half the films on it! Maybe when the political situation is a bit less... Well, just less (lmao), I'll have the mental energy to watch them.

Why I'm More Excited for An 'El Eternauta' Adaptation than 'Dune'

Is Epic Sci-Fi really the best form of sci-fi? Imaginative elements beyond everyday life—such as piloting starships, wielding lightsabers, and conquering giant alien creatures—easily create a strong visual sci-fi aesthetic. In recent years, as epic narrative sci-fi franchises like Dune have swept the globe, many viewers have come to believe that sci-fi's appeal must stem from grandiose imagination. However, adept sci-fi writers go far beyond mere imagination, and sci-fi films should aspire to mo

Statham’s Signature Action Flicks

Why We Keep Coming Back for More??? Let’s cut to the chase: If you’re clicking on A Working Man expecting Citizen Kane levels of storytelling, you’re either a masochist or a Statham stan. Spoiler: I’m the latter. Jason Statham’s latest “retired badass forced back into violence” romp is exactly what you think it is—and that’s the point. The man has perfected a formula so reliable it’s practically a McRib sandwich of cinema: greasy, unapologetic, and weirdly satisfying every damn time. The Statham

Mimi Cave’s Vision of Domestic Horror and The Male Gaze

If you love slow burn thrillers and wild reveals, then Holland is your next obsessive rewatch. Buckle up and adjust your prescription lenses before you hit play , because Holland 2025 is not your average suburban thriller…. This film is packed with nods from the director Mimi Caves favorite auteurs, and she’s not shy about it. There’s a little Hitchcock and dare I say, a dash of David Lynch in how she flirts with psychological horror just enough to keep you on edge. The Polaroid Thesis: Behind t

Super Punch: Who’s the strongest? Who knows

What combination would take down any criminal, villain or ne'er-do-well? For me, it’s the combination of an alien with godlike power that’s known across a large portion of the (DC) universe and some random bald guy in a yellow costume. Superman and Saitama (One Punch Man, in case you didn’t know) are some of the most powerful heroes in fiction. They each have the ability to destroy planets but control themselves to the point of only knocking out their opponent. How would these two interact if th

Charlie Kelmeckis & Todd Anderson: I know what it's like to feel different

I’ve found that most articles for this challenge are based on action films led by brave, intelligent characters with extraordinary physical and combat skills, risking their lives in dangerous situations—often for a greater good. But I’d like to focus on the other side of the spectrum: the quiet ones. The ones who choose solitude. The ones who notice everything and feel even more. The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a 2012 film based on the 1999 novel of the same name, written and directed by Step

A Minecraft Movie: A Movie for Losers

Teenage boys used to be cool. Teenage boys used to be rebellious in a way that felt at least somewhat culturally valuable. They spearheaded counter-cultural activities and artistic movements, like skateboarding and punk music. This “coolness” has always been performative, but it never felt informed by a desire for attention. Now, “coolness” is synonymous with chaos, destruction, and above all else, this thirst for attention at any cost. Now, to feel cool, teenage boys are trashing movie theatres

Matthew Alan Schmidt: I truly fear the effects this phenomenon will have on the future of the theatre experience. I hate how it's becoming normalized for people to record videos on their phones during screenings, many of which with the flash turned on no-less. I'm very grateful to have been able to see this pile of garbage in a 19+ theatre where I didn't have to deal with any of this added social-media-trend bullshit.

'Sinners' Review: A Haunting, Soulful Ode to Black Music and the Vampires Who Feed on It

From the first shot of Sinners, you know you're in for something soul-stirring. A young man, soaked in blood and clutching a shattered guitar, stumbles into a church full of worshippers. His name is Sammie (played by newcomer Miles Caton in a revelatory performance), and his story is one of pain, beauty, and transformation. So too is Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Ryan Coogler's latest film, a bold and breathtaking journey through the heart of the Mississippi Delta that sings with soul and sc

From the Vault Review: Brand New Cherry Flavor (Miniseries)

You know how people say that revenge is sweet? Well, sometimes it’s actually more bittersweet because getting what you want might come at a cost. This is precisely what the Netflix series, Brand New Cherry Flavor by Lenore Zion(and co-writer Nick Antosca ) hammers home. I’ve never read the novel of the same by Todd Grimson , but what I can say is that the TV adaptation is a twisted rollercoaster ride. Brand New Cherry Flavor is set in the early ‘90s, though that becomes more of an afterthought.

Jennifer Check Takes Light Yagami to Dinner

So many mainstream thriller and horror franchises are built around psychotic antagonists facing off against protagonists that are kind of just saner versions of the villains. And I get why that elevates the conflict, drives the plot forward, and gives the audience someone they're obviously meant to root for. The few films that feature two similarly antagonistic characters playing off one another are rare and much harder to develop, but whenever I watch a movie that nails it done right, then that

I Begrudgingly Respect The Minecraft Movie

What do you mean it’s called A Minecraft Movie? No, that doesn’t sound right at all. I’m keeping my article's title as it is… But please, don’t misunderstand me - the emphasis is definitely on “begrudgingly”. I hated A Minecraft Movie. I streamed it (ahoy, matey) at 2x speed, and even then I only got through the first 30 minutes before I was feeling so repulsed that I was certain I was going to vomit. Sure, I only lost 15 minutes of my life to it, but let me tell you, it felt like years… And yet

Lucas Friesen: I can say for certain that they’re successfully targeting this audience. Also they're only blindingly flashy visuals b/c you watch at double speed

Black Mirror: The One Franchise That Should Never Be Canceled

There are only a few things in life that guarantee a passionate internet brawl. One is pineapple on pizza (probably more so for the Italians, ha!). Another is every new season of Black Mirror. The minute Season 7 dropped, I—like every loyal fan with a half-dead attention span and a love for societal collapse—rushed to the comment sections across all the usual sites. And sure enough, there we have it: an eternal tug-of-war between those who rave about how the show has returned to its roots and th
